La Junta nursing home application before state

La Junta Tribune-Democrat - 7/26/2019

Jul. 25--The La Junta Health Service District application for a 56-bed Medicaid nursing home facility is now being reviewed by the state, and the public has the opportunity to review the package and comment on its contents.

Information provided by La Junta Health Service District President/Chairman Johnnie DeLeon Jr., the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center Board of Directors publicly announced that their Nursing Home operations will be closed on March 31, 2020. The facility is in an 89-year-old building on the AVRMC campus, and it needs significant upgrades the current owners cannot fund.

In a market study for the need to have a nursing home, the La Junta City Council hired a consultant who determined La Junta could support at least a 50-bed facility.

The La Junta Health Service District was created by voters, who also approved a one percent sales tax to finance the district.

The non-traditional nursing home will be a hybrid of the Green House Project, which maintains that residents should be able to schedule their own time, have private rooms and bathrooms, and be able to access shared and social areas of the house at any time, making it truly feel like home.

As currently proposed, the facility would consist of four individual residential houses consisting of private rooms and bedrooms. The administration and community center/gathering place would be in a separate structure.

Each home will have an open kitchen, a hearth room and a patio with access to gardening.

Members of the LJHSD board admire the true Green House model but determined the La Junta facility has to have 14 beds per house in order to make the plan work financially.
