Sweet treats for Autism Speaks

Register-Guard - 7/2/2019

The Cherry Time (and the Lemon's Easy) doughnut is back and for a good cause. Voodoo Doughnut recently announced Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to providing advocacy, support and research into the causes and solutions for autism spectrum disorders, as the newest benefactor for they company's quarterly giving campaign.

From July 1 through Sept. 30, Voodoo will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of every Cherry Time doughnut at participating locations to Autism Speaks.

"Coming from a family who has experienced the challenges and more importantly, the joy of someone with autism, I am really happy to be a part of this sweet partnership," said Voodoo Doughnut co-founder, Kenneth "Cat Daddy" Pogson in a news release.

The doughnut itself is a raised yeast doughnut filled with cherry jelly and topped with vanilla frosting, lemonade dust and yellow sprinkles.

This is the first year Voodoo Doughnut implemented quarterly give-back campaigns. During the first two campaigns, the business raised over $14,000 for the Human Rights Campaign and Generosity Feeds. After the Autism Speaks campaign finishes, Voodoo will begin working with a cancer research charity.

Prior to this year's campaigns, Voodoo would run limited-time programs supporting charities on a monthly basis out of its Portland locations. The quarterly give-back campaign allows all locations to participate, spokesperson Sara Heise said. Voodoo has a participating location at 20 Broadway in downtown Eugene.

"All shops create the same limited time offering and sell them for three months as opposed to one," Heise said. "This allows us to make a bigger impact by donating more to charity and increasing awareness."

The doughnuts chosen for the campaigns are fan favorites no longer on the menu or new flavor combinations. To learn more about the campaign, visit www.voodoodoughnut.com
