Easter Seals club brings youth together

Jul. 21--MOULTRIE, Ga. -- Easter Seals Southern Georgia sponsors a unique day camp annually in Colquitt County that includes social skills training.

Under the direction of Jean Gay assisted by Angie Meadows, the group known as Moultrie Summer Club brings children with social delays, including autism, together with typical children to develop understanding and friendships.

The goal of the group is to create an atmosphere where all children are learning to look past the limitations of others and see people with different abilities rather than people with disabilities, according to a press release from the group. Typical children are included to be positive role models to encourage communication and making friends.

The club met in June at Moultrie First Baptist Church and participated in art lessons with children attending summer school at neighboring Stringfellow Elementary School. The summer school group included special needs students ranging in age from pre-k through 12th grade.

Through such enrichment programs that reach out into the community, Easter Seals continues to create solutions that change the lives of children, adults and families with disabilities or special needs, and enable individuals to lead lives of equality, dignity, and independence, the press release said.
