Kingston group to honor veterans on banners

Times Leader - 10/9/2019

Oct. 9--KINGSTON -- The Kingston Historical Society is joining other communities in honoring its veterans -- "Hometown Heroes" -- by selling banners to be hung on utility poles along Wyoming Avenue and Market Street.

"We honor our military in many ways -- special days, parades, ceremonies," said Sandra Touw, co-chairperson of the project with Judi Nunemacher. "Recently, many local towns began lining their street poles with military banners. Other communities along the avenue are also selling banners, so we hope to line the entire route through West Pittston."

Touw and Nunemacher said the Kingston banners will be erected in May 2020 prior to Memorial Day and removed after Veterans Day in November. They said the banners measure 30-inches by 60-inches" and are made of heavy duty vinyl.

"We hope to use them for three years or more," Touw said. "Currently any veteran or family member can download an application from the Kingston Historical Society Facebook page."

Touw said the cost is $175 per banner, which must be submitted with a photo that will appear on the banner. She said the photo will be returned once the banner is proofread.

Questions can be emailed to: [email protected], or call 570-328-0528 or 570-430-4458.

Nunemacher has already purchased a banner honoring her father, Charles W. McKechnie, a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Nunemacher said any veteran, living or deceased, of any era can be honored on a banner. She said 15 have been completed to date.
